Columbus’ House, located in the heart of Genoa’s medieval district, is an important exhibition space dedicated to the historical figure of Christopher Columbus. Surrounded by a historically rich setting near Porta Soprana City Gate, St. Andrew Cloister, and the Barbarossa walls, this house-museum is a cultural heritage site that tells the story of the famous Genoese navigator.
The surrounding urban landscape has undergone numerous transformations over time, yet the path leading to Columbus’ House, through Vico Dritto di Ponticello, still offers a journey into the past, passing through the medieval St. Andrew Cloister and the majestic Porta Soprana City Gate, the ancient entrance to medieval Genoa. Managed by the Cooperativa Solidarietà e Lavoro, the museum narrates the life of young Columbus and the historical context in which he grew up, providing visitors with an immersive experience of the city’s history and great explorations.
What were the main challenges your museum faced before adopting amuseapp?
Columbus’ House faces some structural challenges, as it is a small space that can accommodate only a few visitors at a time. Before amuseapp, there was no guide explaining not only the interior but also the context of the medieval district in which it is located. We needed a more comprehensive solution that could globally enhance the visitor experience.
Did you have other audio guide systems before amuseapp?
Before amuseapp, Columbus’ House offered visitors a self-produced audio guide covering only the interior spaces of the building in four languages: Italian, English, French, and Spanish. Visitors often requested additional languages such as German, Russian, and Portuguese.
Why did you choose amuseapp?
Several factors influenced our decision. What immediately stood out was the team’s willingness to meet our needs and the professionalism of the company. How has amuseapp improved the visitor experience at your museum?
Implementing amuseapp has enabled Columbus’ House to offer a richer and more engaging experience. Thanks to amuseapp, we expanded our language offering from four to seven languages and introduced content that also illustrates the external context of the medieval district. Additionally, it allowed us to introduce innovative features that have significantly enriched the visitor experience:
A multilingual chatbot that enables visitors to interact directly with Christopher Columbus “in person,” asking him any historical questions.
An animated portrait of Christopher Columbus that speaks to visitors, created using deepfake technology.
A QR code preview feature that allows passersby to scan a QR code from a poster near the museum and instantly access a free preview of the audio guide content.
How has amuseapp made the visit more accessible?
Implementing the web app version of the audio guide was a crucial step for us.
Some visitors encountered difficulties downloading the app due to poor connectivity inside the building, making the start of the visit less smooth. To solve this issue, we collaborated with the amuseapp team and implemented the web app version of the audio guide. Now, after purchasing a ticket, visitors can simply scan a QR code and immediately access the tour itinerary without downloading any application. This has made the experience faster and more accessible for everyone.
Are visitors satisfied with the audio guide and chatbot?
Visitor feedback has been very positive. The integrated questionnaire within the app provides us with valuable insights, confirming some previously known aspects while also revealing new information, such as the geographical origins of our visitors.
We have received particularly positive comments on interactive features like the chatbot and the animated portrait. These elements have made the visit more engaging and memorable.
